Gov. Tim Walz issued a writ of special election Friday that sets Tuesday, Sept. 16 as the date for a special election to fill the District 34B House seat formerly held by Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park), who was killed in her home June 14.

If necessary, a special primary election for nomination of candidates will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Affidavits of candidacy and nominating petitions for the seat must be filed with the Office of Secretary of State or the county auditors of Anoka and Hennepin counties beginning Tuesday, July 15 until 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 22.

Most of District 34B is comprised of Brooklyn Park, with a few precincts in Coon Rapids and Champlin.
